The signal is gone. Your navigation says one thing. Your clock says another. The voice on the phone sounds exactly like your CEO. That is the world your security team works in, and public analysis of the modern battlefield shows where it is heading.

Today I'm sharing my first Infinitum Corporation whitepaper: "Dead Reckoning: AI for Security Operations in a Jammed, Spoofed, Watched World."

I read public analysis from CSIS and the bodies that track satellite-navigation interference, then asked one question: what does the modern battlefield teach the people who defend organizations? Persistence. Cheap mass against exquisite systems. Constant observation. Jammed and spoofed signals. Supply lines that are never safe. This is a comparison, not a claim that your network is a front line. The paper takes no side and makes no claim about any party.

The numbers

  • Verizon's 2026 DBIR: exploiting vulnerabilities is now the top way into a breach, at 31%, up from 20%.
  • IBM and Ponemon Institute, 2026: mean time to identify and contain a breach rose to 247 days. Attacks "can be launched for thousands while breaches cost millions."
  • IBM also found organizations using security AI and automation extensively averaged USD 4.00 million per breach, versus USD 5.93 million for those using none. The key word is averaged: an association, not a guarantee.

What dead reckoning means for security operations

Dead reckoning is how you navigate when the signal fails: last known position, heading, speed, time and a second source. My advice for security operations is the same. Govern first. Measure a baseline. Pilot with analysts in the loop. Keep an independent check on every critical signal. The paper includes a 90-day plan, a 12-month roadmap and a quarterly dead reckoning check.

Don't take my word for it. Read the sources.
